Rockies and Landscape Design

You and I are inextricably connected to the environment in which we live and breathe. Our physical surroundings shape and determine the quality of our lives in profound ways. That's why it’s essential for Landscape Design to consider the relationship between humans, plants, animals and their physical environment. 

After all, everything is connected. 

When we drive through the country, we often find ourselves marveling at the beauty of the landscape. Maybe it’s the winding river, the rolling hills, snow-capped mountains, or the crystal clear water of a pristine lake surrounded by endless forests. 

We are in awe. 

When I was sixteen, I had the privilege of cycling through the Canadian Rockies from Glacier National Park up to Jasper. Though the adventure was just two weeks long, the landscape left an indelible mark on me. I was deeply moved by its rugged beauty, towering peaks, and the vibrant emerald lakes.

As a result of this experience, I contend that for landscape design to truly resonate, it must do three things:

1. Inspire awe and wonder through its profound beauty.

2. Restore our connection with the natural world. 

3. Help regenerate the environment by capturing carbon, restoring biodiversity and promoting sustainable water management.
