Landscape Design as Storytelling

Last Monday I attended the Landscape Designer and Landscape Architect conference hosted by Landscape Ontario and the OALA. Besides connecting with a number of great people in my profession, the speakers for the event had valuable information to communicate with us. One of the presenters in particular caught my attention and I want to share his key idea with you today.

Bob Scarfo, a professor and landscape architect from Washington State, spoke on the subject: Landscape Architecture as Storytelling.  In a nutshell, your landscape design tells a story - your story. As a result, Bob encouraged us to design with your story in mind. In other words, how do you want your story to read? How will you, the hero of your story, rise above your present day challenges and thrive as a person?

Do you see yourself spending more time outdoors with family and friends as you share a meal together? We can design your garden for that storyline to naturally unfold. Perhaps you want a space where you can unwind after a long day of work? As designers, we can integrate this space into your landscape design too.

Bob reminded us that storytelling in design is about our client; it’s about your transcendence. As a result, it's essential that your design is well integrated with your home's architecture and environment, and, that the design acts as a guide leading you to where you want to go and who you desire to be.

If you’re looking to get your property landscaped this year, I invite you to ask yourself a few key questions when you consider the landscape design.

1. How do I see myself in this design?

2. What am I doing?

3. Who am I spending time with in this space?

4. How am I feeling?

5. Who am I becoming?

Until next time...

Thrive in harmony
