How did I end up here?
Perhaps this very question has been playing through your mind lately like a top 40 pop song on the radio.
“How did I end up here?” you’re asking yourself.
- Here in this relationship
- Here in this town
- Here at this job
- Here in this particular circumstance
- Here feeling lost and alone
- Here wondering what to do next
- Here struggling with an addiction
- Here battling cancer
- Here without a career
- Here financially broke
Today, my friend, I have one thing to say, “You are not alone.” There are thousands, maybe even millions of us who are asking the same question. It’s like we’re a mass choir, who together are singing this chorus in four-part harmony.
I can hear it.
It’s haunting, ethereal, earthy, sublime.
It’s truly a majestic piece of music that brings to our attention the human cry for purpose, meaning and fulfillment.
All souls long for this.
The quest for purpose, meaning and fulfillment are key elements that unite all human beings. When we feel lost, alone, broken; when we feel entangled in the web of our own life choices; when the talons of fear and angst are crushing the life force from us, we cry out: “How did I end up here?”
And today, as we raise our voice in harmony, it may feel like heaven remains silent; it may appear like no one is listening.
And yet here we are. You and me.
I’m listening. I hear you. I witness you.
I see your spirit. I feel your hurt.
“I know the plans I have for you,” says the Maker of heaven and earth. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. And then you will seek me and find me as you search for me with all your heart. I am the life you yearn for and I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.*
You are not alone.
Go in peace.
Until next time…
Be You. Be Unitas.
